Spirometry

-	May obtain to determine cause of underlying lung pathology
-	Required for diagnosis of COPD
-	Interpretation Strategy
-Assure correct age, sex, ethnicity, height/weight
-Confirm validity – good effort, no cough, 2 best are similar effort
    -Check for obstruction – FEV1/FVC < 0.7, elevated TLCO
-Determine severity of obstruction based on FEV1
        -Mild: > 80%
        -Moderate: 50-79%
        -Severe: 30-49%
        -Very Severe: <30%
-Check for restriction – FVC < 80% with a normal or increased FEV1/FVC
-Determine if reversibility is present – FEV1 or FVC increase post albuterol
    -Assess flow volume loops
-Obstructive: coving noted on inspiration with decreased amplitude
-Restriction: similar as normal flow loop but decreased amplitude
    -Assess DLCO
-Decreased: consider emphysema, thickening of alveoli, pulmonary HTN, anemia
-Elevated: consider exercise, asthma, pulmonary hemorrhage, polycythemia vera
